Sangiovese is Italy's most widespread grape variety. Undisputed lord of the hills between Rimini and Imola, it has always been a source of energy for work in the fields, of joy for aristocratic tables and relief from the hard rules of monastic life. And it is precisely in a monastery in the Rimini area that the name Sangiovese is said to have been coined. Myth has it that the name derives from Sanguis Jovis, blood of Jupiter, a name given to it by a Capuchin monk from the convent of Sant'Arcangelo di Romagna, near Mount Jupiter, during a banquet in honour of Pope Leo XII, who asked what the name of the exquisite nectar the monks had served was.
